Sculpture

Whether pencil or paint, I have always made art on 2-dimensional surfaces. I have always loved 3-dimensional art. Looking at minimalist sculptures by Donald Judd, I started thinking of ways to make some kind of sculpture.
Think of these as mini-sculptures. I had a length of pine wood cut into individual blocks. I applied gesso to each block. Next, I painted each face a different color. The paint was applied directly from the tube, no mixing with other colors. I wanted to achieve a bold, graphic and vibrant surface.
When I’m placing colors against each other in a painting, a relationship exists that I have a lot of control over. But when colors meet at a 3-dimensional edge, that relationship completely changes. The light source and its angle influence the color interactions.
